Key IS projects this year: Virtualisation migration; centralised storage

upgrade, remote access review and expanding collaboration tools

across the organisation; document management; supercomputer

installation; implementation of SCCM application management tool.

PROVIDING FACILITIES THAT will allow its research programme to

remain leading edge is among the 2008 objectives of AgResearch, a

crown-owned research and development company. Challenges include

the need to improve customer management, lower transaction costs

and improve access to organisational knowledge assets. Maintaining

focus on high performance computing is a key strategic goal of the

AgResearch ICT team, led by CIO Dr Phillip Lindsay.

This year AgResearch plans to introduce a unified communication

strategy incorporating video conferencing equipment and associated

desktop tools. Dr Lindsay says implementation of a company-wide

document management system is also planned, as is expanding the

organisation’s storage area network to accommodate growth in data

requirements across the organisation. AgResearch has also initiated a

remote access review, as well as beginning a super-computer installation

and implementation of a SCCM application management tool.

Dr Lindsay says ongoing ICT challenges include the demand for

improved data security solutions, the need for ongoing infrastructure

upgrades and a huge increase in storage requirements.

Server virtualisation is an ongoing project, as is the continued

rollout of wireless and VoIP technologies — all of which reduce costs

and increase effi ciencies across the organisation.

Dr Lindsay says any change in the telecommunications environment

that results in wider adoption of broadband, particularly in the rural sector,

will deliver advantage in terms of AgResearch’s ability to deliver information

products to the pastoral sector.

AgResearch is a light outsourcer, with only PC maintenance

outsourced to HP.
