DELIVERING QUALITY ICT services to support and enhance student

learning outcomes for both the student and staff communities, is the

key objective of the ICT services team at Porirua-based Whitireia

Community Polytechnic.

The second key objective is to facilitate the business operation of the

polytechnic. ICT manager Hylton Tuckett says Whitireia will

spend 2008 consolidating business systems and

services around Microsoft and SQL server technologies.

“This year our goals include retirement of the Novell network

infrastructure and a complete migration to a full Microsoft-based

environment. This will be a major achievement for the Whitireia ICT

team and the deployment will provide the vehicle for deploying

various enabling technologies and core business system integration,”

says Tuckett.

He says network security remains a major concern. Issues Whitireia

is addressing include system intrusion, detection and prevention and

firewall interfaces. It will also address DMZ structures and SSL VPN

remote access to provide superior throughput and resilience for

customers, partners, students and staff. Whitireia will be working with

IBM to design and build a new infrastructure on its network border.

Other key projects in terms of budget are business application upgrades

and foundation planning towards information lifecycle management.

Setting up and integrating a new Wellington city campus, due for completion

in the first quarter, has been an important project achievement.

Whitireia is increasing its use of the multi-sourcing model for specialist

technical support and development. PC maintenance and SQL

Database Administration is outsourced to Dell and Fujitsu respectively,

with network management looked after by IBM.

The maintenance, development and support of all the core business applications, student

management, fi nance, payroll, and library is outsourced to the associated

vendors, SMSS, TechnologyOne, Frontier and Softlink.
