Key IS projects this year: Hardware refresh; new head office building

ICT infrastructure.

IN SPITE OF recent ructions with the global credit crisis, Westpac New

Zealand GM Technology and Operations David Boyes says Westpac is

well placed with a solid platform to deliver on growth plans.

The growth plans for the bank involve fi ve key business objectives

or strategic imperatives: To develop a real customer centred culture;

have engaged and skilled staff; improve margin management; deliver

productivity gains; optimise channels.

“IT is the enabler of Westpac’s strategy. Our initiatives are strategically

aligned to our business strategy and fully documented in our IT

plan. Particular priority is given to improving functionality and performance

of our systems that support customers and customer-facing staff.

Staying connected to the challenges that people in our branch network

face has been a priority for the team and has changed our internal

processes and measurements,” says Boyes.

He says getting out of the office and talking to people in different parts

of the business, and particularly branches, is a priority. This enables the

ICT team to be faster at identifying the root cause of problems, measuring

what matters and prioritising actions.

Westpac New Zealand uses a range of ICT partners and vendors with

IBM and Gen-i prominent. The bank is happy with the performance of

its main suppliers. He says software vendor mergers are a “fact of life”

in today’s market, something Westpac needs to stay on top of and be

ready to respond to quickly.

“Our sourcing team is actively engaged with our suppliers, keeps

abreast of latest developments and is continually reassessing our

position with our major suppliers.”
