Key IS projects this year: Infrastructure upgrade.

BUILDING SAFE COMMUNITIES and ensuring a fair and effective justice

system for all New Zealanders are key priorities for the Government.

It is therefore vital the Ministry of Justice has a strong focus on the

continued development and enhancement of its services across the

broader justice sector to maximise its effectiveness and meet future

demands, says Carol Abernethy, general manager Technology and

In 2008, in addition to a full legislative programme of work, the

Ministry will continue to extend its service delivery capabilities to

provide improvements for court users, to advance effective interventions

in areas such as youth offending, family violence and organised

crime; and to offer greater support to victims of crime.

Abernethy says as the Ministry enters a new fi nancial year in July

2008, it will begin to establish new foundational capabilities identifi ed

in its Information Systems Strategic Plan. The priority of these capabilities

was confi rmed more recently through an integrated planning

process, which has established the following four key priorities for the

Ministry in the coming years: Integrated case management; electronic

content management and data warehousing; electronic channels and

electronic fi ling; and future positioning of IT infrastructure to support

key business changes.

A particular focus for the Ministry over the coming few years is the

increasing demand on systems in the Auckland region, which will likely

lead to centres in this region becoming early adopters of the priority

solutions outlined above. Also, as part of enhancing its infrastructure,

the Ministry of Justice will implement a new storage area network

over the next few months, followed by work on consolidating servers

utilising virtualisation technologies.
