THE VISION FOR Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) is to

gain overall recognition as an international centre of excellence in

vocational education, through delivery of programmes that are high

quality and support economic development.

Key challenges include meeting the increasing need for more

fl exible and workplace delivery education models and increasing

customer expectations, while operating within a reduced funding

environment.

CIO Michael Fitzgerald says ICT helps enhance education delivery

options and access to WelTec learning resources, as well as driving

effi ciencies and giving improved business processes for better

decision making.

ICT systems also allow WelTec to monitor and track

students through different stages of the learning process, as well

as enhancing the student experience through student access to the

latest technologies, computers and software.

“IT delivers the relevant, industry-specialised training tools for

many of the technology-based programmes offered by WelTec and

enhances student fl exibility through distance and blended learning

solutions. In a nutshell, IT contributes to the delivery of the ‘Hi Tec,

WelTec’ brand promise,” says Fitzgerald.

Key IT projects for 2008 include a migration from Novell to Microsoft;

implementation of IT governance based on CoBIT; upgrades

and enhancements to business intelligence and fi nancial software

tools; a standard hardware upgrade and server virtualisation. Other

key projects include an HR system upgrade.
