Key IS projects this year: PeopleSoft upgrade.

LIKE OTHER TERTIARY institutions, Auckland’s Unitec is aware of the

impact of government policy and the competitive nature of the New

Zealand tertiary education market.

Challenges include the normal pressure on IT project budgets and

regular ICT operations, coupled with the strategic need to improve

corporate efficiencies, profi tability and the student experience.

ICT systems and ICT development are needed to improve services

and processes and to monitor operational performance at Unitec. ICT

offers support for all information technology services and systems

across the Unitec campuses, and Unitec’s “Ask IT” help desk is a single

point of contact for Unitec students and staff from all departments and

schools. Ask IT logs, manages, co-ordinates and resolves all requests

relating to Unitec information technology services.

Unitec has a new IT director, Peter Winquist, following the departure

of John McMaster from the role.

Winquist says the coming 12 months will be an interesting and busy

period for ICT projects, with business process reviews and a PeopleSoft

upgrade to version 9 on the agenda, and ongoing server and software

virtualisation projects.

Unitec will also make a signifi cant investment in disaster recovery

and business performance systems this year. Knowledge management

systems, mobile communications and e-business portals are further

areas of ICT focus.

A light outsourcer, most ICT functions are performed in-house via

Unitec’s IT team of 54. Exceptions are PC maintenance and on-site

warranty support, which is outsourced to Cyclone Computers, and

AV design and installation. Key ICT vendor partners on performance

management systems and projects include Vodafone, IBM and Oracle.
