The Ministry is committed to building an education system for the

21st century, increasing education’s contribution to economic transformation

and innovation through new knowledge, skills and research.

Acting CIO Judith Johnson says the success of these goals depends

on the capability of the Ministry’s IT infrastructure and services, to

support a quick and effective response to social and economic change

within the community.

Specific ICT goals for 2008 include leadership, development and

implementation of New Zealand ICT Strategic Framework for Education;

a focus on connectivity and an Open Standards-driven infrastructure for

education sector ICT; and increasing access to education sector online

resources and services through a single point of entry and single signon

(the ESAA project).

The ICT team is also implementing initiatives to enable education agencies

to collect and share data efficiently and effectively; as well as being focused

on lowering compliance burdens and enabling data to be collected once and

made accessible to sector agencies (The Education Sector Integration Services project).

Johnson says 2008 will see the Ministry build on the success

of the Enhancing Enrolment Management (ENROL) project and

further reduce the burden of compliance for schools by improving

the quality of the data collected. Internal knowledge management

capability will also be enhanced through full deployment of a

document management system.
