NORTHTEC IS A state-owned tertiary education provider in the north

of New Zealand with more than 10 campuses and learning centres,

60 community learning locations, 480 staff members and 12,000

students.

Chief information officer Xiaohui Xu says over the past year

NorthTec has implemented a number of IT projects and systems

including NorthTec Learning Gateway, Exchange 2007, Microsoft

Office Communication Server 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint

Server 2007.

“These projects provide a more cost-effective way to conduct learning

and teaching, reaching remotely-located students to enhance the

learning experience and provide better quality teaching.”

NorthTec Learning Gateway (NLG) is a solution framework that

integrates the tools people already utilise, putting them to use to

connect people with the information and processes they need

to teach, share and learn. The NLG allows learning, teaching and

collaboration to take place anywhere and in real time.

“With a single place in which to consolidate all communication, access

and learning, students can learn anywhere and lecturers can teach anytime,”

says Xiaohui.

NorthTec Learning Gateway won the Institutions and

Polytechnics New Zealand 2007 best business development award.

IT project focus for NorthTec in 2008 includes researching the use

of Web 2.0, social networking and KAREN (Kiwi Advanced Research

and Education Network) for learning and teaching; and further

developing the technology infrastructure to support fl exible learning

delivery.

Key infrastructure projects include the integration of

NorthTec Learning Gateway and unifi ed communication, the integration

of the NorthTec campus-portal learning management system;

Live@Edu, as well as server consolidation and virtualisation.
