AS WELL AS implementing IT initiatives to improve administrative

processes and IT facilities, ITS at Lincoln is actively engaging with the

teaching and research communities to increase its productivity and

service levels in those areas of core business.

Two such initiatives are the implementation of Smartboard technology

in all lecture theatres along with technology to record, package and distribute

visual and audio from the lectures in a form that students can playback on a

The implementation of the new version of the PeopleSoft Student

Management System with increased self-service functions has

highlighted the fact that packages, for example, student management

systems, timetabling systems and course management systems often

have overlapping functionality.

As a result Lincoln is faced with the decision about which one to use,

says John Buckler, ITS director. He says this is leading the university

to look at portal technology as a possible way to provide functionality

by plugging in components, or web-parts, as needed.

Buckler says while telecommunications costs are still a big

expense for Lincoln, some savings have been made due to increased

competition created by additional fibre laid out to Lincoln for the KAREN

network. Server and storage virtualisation has been a great success and

is helping reduce IT operation costs and increase reliability.
