HOUSING NEW ZEALAND Corporation information technology

manager Rob Herries manages 40 ICT staff. He says Housing New

Zealand is focused on the government theme of families for 2008

and beyond.

This includes providing support and choices for people

to achieve their housing goals, along with delivery of a wide range of

products to meet that focus. Products include housing support, loans,

as well as education products for people looking to get into their

fi rst homes.

He says ICT funding has been set, meaning the current economic

slowdown is not expected to impact on planned ICT projects including

signifi cant ERP and business continuity system upgrades, investment

in VoIP platforms and unifi ed communications applications; and CRM,

EDI and e-business initiatives designed to provide 24x7 online access

to Housing New Zealand services.

“We are not looking at Web 2.0 at the moment, but we are looking at a

lot of EDI and web work. We are starting to develop a lot of electronic

linkages with external suppliers and service providers, and we know

most of our customers will want to use our websites outside of the

normal work day environment,” says Herries.

Other significant ICT projects are email management and storage;

business continuity, including a move away from a pure DR solution

and towards more fault tolerant solutions; and rationalisation of photocopier,

printer, and scanner devices to MFP devices.

Housing New Zealand also has a signifi cant ongoing mobilisation

project. This year will see implementation of a mobile workforce application

to allow remote staff to interrogate back-end databases.

Housing New Zealand completes most operational and project ICT

work in-house, but PC maintenance is outsourced to Gen-i, HR Payroll

to Jade, and systems and network management to IBM.
