AUSTRALASIAN COMPANY APN News & Media, publisher of The

New Zealand Herald amongst other publications, requires flexible

technology that allows the business to quickly adapt and respond

to market changes. In New Zealand, this is the task of the IT team,

headed by chief technology offi cer Darren Turner.

He says IT management works closely with the business to develop

a technology strategy that supports business strategy. Senior

management and business owners understand the important role IT

plays in business success “completely”, says Turner.

He says ICT provides competitive advantage by delivering robust

and fl exible technology solutions that meet business expectations.

There is also an ongoing expectation that ICT will be more creative

in order to meet business challenges.

“We have achieved a stable operating environment, and are now

focused on hardware refreshes and system upgrades to deliver

enhanced business services,” says Turner.

Key applications are now centralised and run across the WAN. On

the telecommunications front, Turner says APN makes the most of 3G

and GPRS mobile technologies to provide a competitive edge, such as

in securing on-the-spot photos.

“You can have a photo for your paper transmitted in two or 30

minutes, depending on the mobile technology you use,” he says.

APN NZ has implemented a VoIP solution to accommodate its

regional contact centre based in Tauranga. In the coming 12 months

APN will embark on projects in all major areas of ICT focus, including

expanding VoIP to trans-Tasman operational status, further standardising

applications, ERP and financial systems while also enhancing

e-business capabilities.
