N4L, Aura RedShield Security and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare took out the top prizes in the inaugural CIO100 awards in New Zealand.
The three won in the following respective categories: ICT-enabled community project, innovation and digital transformation.
The trophies to the winners and finalists were presented during the CIO100 events held in Auckland and Wellington this week.
The awarding ceremonies were part of the launch of the 2016 CIO100, the annual report on the top ICT using organisations in New Zealand.
The awards were open to organisations outside the CIO100.
“We were incredibly impressed with the high standard of entries and this made the judges' job very difficult,” says Barbara Simon, president and publisher, IDG Enterprise Australia and New Zealand (publisher of CIO New Zealand and Australia); and general manager, CIO Executive Council.
Simon was a member of the panel of judges together with five CIOs from New Zealand and Australia.
The judges awarded two entries as highly commended and one overall winner for the following categories:
- ICT-enabled community project: Recognises organisations that are harnessing business technologies to help solve social and community issues.
- Innovation: Standout projects that led to a new product or service, increased efficiency, or set the organisation apart from the rest of the industry.
- Digital Transformation: A project that enabled the organisation evolve to become a digital business or used digital platforms to transform the organisation.
The ICT-enabled community project had five finalists:
● Code Club Aotearoa
● She Sharp
● Orion Health
● Manukau Institute of Technology

● N4L (Network for Learning)
The judges awarded two highly commended entries: Code Club Aotearoa: and Manukau Institute of Technology.
The winner is N4L: Network for Learning is a Crown company that was formed to provide all Kiwi students and teachers equitable access to high quality internet services and dynamic digital content for learning.

The Innovation Category had five finalists:
● Spark New Zealand
● ASB Bank Limited
● Aura RedShield Security
● Air New Zealand
● Fletcher Building
The judges awarded two highly commended entries: ASB Bank and Air New Zealand.
The winner is: Aura RedShield Security, for its "Security-as-a-Service" which is aligned to the New Zealand Cyber Security Strategy to provide Kiwi companies the capability to be resilient to cybercrime and other threats plaguing the technology landscape. They have provided a new approach to enable more small and medium companies the ability to access greatly needed security capability to protect themselves. The platform could be used to create a knowledge base of vulnerabilities that are prevalent in New Zealand, something that would help the economy as a whole.
The Digital Transformation Category had five finalists:
- Perpetual Guardian
- Green Acres
- Fletcher Building
- Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
- Air New Zealand
The judges have chosen two highly commended finalists: Green Acres and Fletcher Building.

The winner is Fisher & Paykel Healthcare: Fisher and Paykel Healthcare has traditionally been a designer and manufacturer of medical devices, and a key area of development for them was the device for treating sleep apnea. They took what was a very costly, reactive and manual follow-up process, and replaced it with a cloud based informatics solution that would automatically analyse and remotely manage patient populations. The informatics platform is now available over 20 countries.
