On 1 February 2011, The Department of Internal Affairs, the National Library of New Zealand and New Zealand Archives integrated to become one department — Internal Affairs. The integration was a direction from Government for more effective and efficient performance and service delivery of State sector agencies, through improved collaboration and reduced ICT operational and management costs.
At the same time, the function and associated people of the Government Chief Information Officer (GCIO) transferred to Brendan Boyle, chief executive of the Department of Internal Affairs.
The GCIO mandate includes technology, information and data management and access and service delivery improvement enabled by ICT. These changes, coupled with the work done over the past 12 months, puts Internal Affairs in a unique ICT leadership position in the public sector, being home to the GCIO, the lead agency for a number of all-of-government initiatives and providing resources, knowledge and support to the Department and several other agencies.
