With the formation of KiwiRail as a State Owned Enterprise, a new CIO position was introduced to oversee the ICT landscape of the merged businesses. The business has suffered from significant under-investment in the past few years, but with a new business plan in place there are a number of areas where IT will play a significant role.
There will be a period of consolidation and integration of ICT environments as the different businesses merge. CIO Graeme Docherty says that there are some significant technology refresh opportunities in both the IT infrastructure and applications landscapes, as the businesses seek to invest in new technology to enable the expected growth in rail transport.
Key projects for the coming year include new systems to manage the assets for KiwiRail Network (Ontrack); the consolidation of the multiple SAP environments currently in place across the Group; and the upgrade of the freight operations systems.
“Underpinning the new business applications will be a refresh of core IT infrastructure, as we look to integrate our environments. We have already rolled out a new company-wide VoIP platform,” explains Docherty. Further integration and upgrade opportunities exist around the email and Microsoft Office platforms at KiwiRail.
