The focus on a geographically-diverse client base continues to be a key ICT driver for engineering and professional service consultancy Beca. CIO Robin Johansen says further goals are to maintain an effective and efficient business to serve clients in difficult times, and to continue to develop partnering and collaboration both locally and internationally.
“Like almost any other business in New Zealand, we have uncertainty regarding the depth and duration of the recession. Another challenge is the need to maintain top-level data security for an increasingly mobile workforce that does not want intrusive security measures impeding their work, yet at the same time acknowledging we operate in a sophisticated malware environment that has the potential to wreak havoc,” says Johansen.
Beca has seen a decrease in its ICT and project budget for 2009 and will proceed mainly with the updating of existing infrastructure, some software development, server virtualisation and business continuity and knowledge management projects.
Beca continues to see business benefit from its earlier investment in video conferencing technologies, and these benefits are timely as reduced travel brings significant time savings, as well as reduced cost for airfares and lower environmental impact.
The rapid growth of 3D visualisation software and proliferation of images, video and GIS data continues to challenge Beca’s data storage facilities. This reflects Beca’s need to create and modify enduring assets that can have a life measured in decades rather than years. “Understandably, there is an expectation that we can recover and reuse data from many years ago in the support of our clients,” says Johansen.
