Packed in tightly: Blades get sharpened

Jamming as much computing power into the smallest possible footprint is the goal behind blade servers. We recently tested three different server blade platforms -- Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (HP's) ProLiant BL p-Class Blade Enclosure, IBM Corp.'s BladeCenter and RLX Technologies Inc.'s 600ex. On performance, we found the blades are pretty close -- where they differ is in the companies' systems management applications and availability options -- but IBM wins our Clear Choice Award for providing management and administration that was a cut above the competition.
All three vendors provided systems with architectures that perform about the same and are ready for heavy work.
