  • Papa Sangre II Developer: Playground Publishing Price: $4.99 for the iPad and iPhone 4S and newer iPhones Ratings: 93 (out of 100) from Metacritic; 4.5 stars from App Store users This spooky one-player audio-only action game debuted on Halloween, and the premise is that you are dead and trying to make your way back to the other side.

  • Lords of Waterdeep Developer: Playdek Price: $6.99 Ratings: 89 from Metacritic; 4.5 stars from App Store users. The D&D board game surfaced on iOS this year, bringing you the City of Spendor, a place run by masked and shady Lords.

  • Sorcery! 2 Developer: Inkle Price: $4.99 Ratings: 88 from Metacritic; 5 stars from App Store users. Designer Steve Jackson’s epic adventure through sewers, buildings and ships in a city of thieves, traps and magic.

  • Anomaly 2 Developer: Chillingo Price: $4.99 Ratings: 86 from Metacritic; 2.5 stars from users on App Store This alien-smashing follow-on to Anomaly Warzone Earth has intense graphics, so isn’t recommended for earlier iPhones, according to the developer (and users do report crashes). It is, by the way, available too on BlackBerry and Android devices.

  • Rayman Fiesta Run Developer: Ubisoft Price: $2.99 Ratings: 86 on Metacritic; 4.5 stars from App Store users Take your platforming hero Rayman for an adventure that includes lunging for cocktail umbrellas, leaping for limes and punching piñatas. A follow-up to 2012’s Rayman Jungle Run.

  • Shadowrun Returns Developer: Harebrained Schemes Price: $9.99 Ratings: 85 from Metacritic; 3 stars from App Store users. This crowdfunded role-playing game for iOS and Android tablets takes place in 2054, and magic has returned to the world, awakening elves, trolls, orks and more. Big bad corporations are lurking though.

  • Strata Developer: Graveck Price: $2.99 Ratings: 85 from Metacritic; 4.5 stars from App Store users. This iPhone and iPad puzzler of a game involves layering colorful ribbons in the right order.

  • Heroes of Loot Developer: OrangePixel Price: $1.99 Ratings: 84 from MetaCritic; 4.5 stars by App Store users. According to the developer, this is “THE dungeon game” and walks a fine line between “dungeon crawler and shoot-em up.”

  • Paint it Back Developer: Casual Labs Price: Free Ratings: 84 from Metacritic; 5 stars by App Store users. A puzzler based on recreating stolen paintings.

  • Tilt to Live 2: Redonkulous Developer: One Man Left Price: $2.99 Ratings: 83 from MetaCritic; 4 stars by App Store users. A fast-paced arcade tilter involving dastardly dots, fiery weapons and lasers.

  • Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse Developer: Disney Interactive Studios Price: $9.99 Ratings: 83 on Metacritic; 4 stars by App Store users. This re-imagining of the SEGA Genesis classic finds the high-pitched hero braving assorted threats to save Minnie.

  • Type: Rider Developer: Bulkypix Price: $2.99 Ratings: 83 on Metacritic; 4.5 stars by App Store users For something a little different, uncover the history and secrets of fonts and characters.

  • Tic Tactics Developer: Hidden Variable Studios Price: Free Ratings: 83 on Metacritic; 4.5 stars by App Store users. A fresh take on tic-tac-toe.

  • Pandemic: The Board Game Developer: F2Z Digital Media Price: $6.99 Ratings: 83 on Metacritic; 4.5 stars by App Store users. Keep diseases at bay and find cures for them as you travel the world.

  • Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies Developer: 2K Games Price: $4.99 Ratings: 82 on Metacritic; 4 stars by App Store users Take flight and redefine World War II battles in this game.

  • GT Racing 2: The Real Car Experience Developer: Gameloft Price: Free, though of course in-app purchases encouraged. Ratings: 82 on Metacritic; 4.5 stars by App Store users. Racing simulation game includes new cars, tracks and improved graphics.

  • Bit.trip Run! Developer: Gaijin Games Price: $3.99 Ratings: 82 on Metacritic; 4.5 stars by App Store users. This iOS version of Runner2 includes plenty of weirdness, including the Reverse Merman, against a rhythmic music background as you run, jump, slide and kick your way to your goal.
